The students of the Guildhall in London are set to bring brass into the community.

As one of the world's leading music conservatories, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London attaches great importance to the promotion of its brass band as an integral part of ensemble training for its brass and percussion students.

First time

And MD Chris Houlding has told 4BR, that although the college accepts many talented young players with brass band experience, it is also the first time many, especially overseas students, come into contact with this unique combination.

"The Guildhall usually runs two or three projects a year with an intensive rehearsal period featuring interesting and challenging repertoire," he said.

"Recent programmes have included premieres by Mark Anthony Turnage and Paul Whalley, the music of Takemitsu, Gavin Higgins and Simon Dobson, plus classics by Heaton, Graham, McCabe and Howarth."

Workshop

Besides presenting concerts within the college, the band normally gives a second performance outside which often includes a workshop for Youth Bands, Schools and Music Services.

Recent appearances at Wellington College and Bromley Youth Music Trust have helped to establish new, constructive links between organisations.

And as part of that process, the Guildhall Brass Band will be heard in a community event linked at Croydon Salvation Army on Sunday 24th February.
